Outsource SEO Firms – Why Would Choose One Over In-house Expertise?

April 30, 2010 | In: Uncategorized

Anyone who uses their website as part of their marketing program knows they can benefit from search engine optimisation (SEO) to improve traffic and the quality of that traffic. One option that many firms need to evaluate is whether it is more sensible to outsource SEO requirements or have these SEO skills in-house or should they. As with anything in life there are advantages to both options.

With outsourcing obviously comes a cost to pay for that expertise. This may be an unappealing thought. But you need to remember there is always going to be a cost to provide these services internally. There will be training and equipment costs, plus the fact if your IT person is doing SEO he will not be doing something else.

Providing the SEO expertise from inside your firm will give you the benefit of that person understanding the company culture and its desired future direction. If this is outsourced there is an investment of time needed to brief the consultant on company information and jargon as well as needing to understand the website structure.

The outsourced SEO expert will have specialization and techniques that time to learn. You can master it in-house but it takes more time and money. These experts should know the market trends and changes made by search engines to policy which are more than likely to pass you by. If you do master these skills it will be an asset in the firm, but will still require on-going education.

Outsourced SEO firms will have a variety of people to apply to any project. Their staff may even have personal specializations such as link building or content tweaking. Employing them will allow you to tap into the expertise of a library of people. That really can’t be matched in-house.

Engaging an SEO firm should also lead to your staff learning about various techniques indirectly. This will be an advantage for you and them in the future. It will allow your staff to make targeted inputs into future marketing plan developments and particular content.

So it is obvious there are pros and cons to both ways of doing SEO. One way to quantify this is to do a rough cost benefit analysis between the two options. Estimate what it costs you internally to do and compare it to what it would cost to outsource that SEO expertise. There may be ongoing costs to re-engaging an SEO firm, but there would also be internal costs of maintaining that knowledge base.

SEO is one of the biggest unknown tools in your arsenal so you want to do it right. It’s like maintaining your car; of course you could do it yourself. But you’d have to have the right equipment, tools and knowledge to do it well – and aren’t there other things you want to spend your weekends on? The same applies to SEO. Wow!, this was a top quality post. In concept I’d like to publish like this also – taking time and real effort to make a solid article… but what can I say… I keep putting it off and never seem to get something finished
